"Video Games and Aggression: A Link to Violence?" by Viet Nguyen
According to Nguyen's essay, the main problem with the argument that video games cause violence is that the research is flawed and inconclusive. Do you agree? Can you think of a better way to conduct research on the link between games and violence?
I don't agree with Nguyen. I think that the research is accurate when they relate video games with violence. Video games simply plant the seed of violence into a person's mind.
I agree to an extent with Nguyen. I have some friends who game excessively and they aren't violent. Honestly I don't play many video games and I am far more aggressive than those friends. So I think it depends on your personality.
You are relating violent video games with violent behavior. I have played video games that are violent and I have played videogames that have you dance. so that must have planted a violent seed and a dancing seed. Now I can tell you last time danced, but for the life of me I can not remember the last time I killed someone with a sword. Evan C.
I do believe that violence in children's lives do effect then. The kids might believe that the violence is normal. This is why they put the video game rating on them.
I don't know if "violent" video games contribute to violent behavior. My husband plays Halo 3 and Call of Duty every once in a while and he's the kindest, most gentle person I have ever known. Yet my little brother with a learning disability is not allowed to play such video games because he thinks it's cool to shoot guns and aims even play guns at people. I guess it depends on other factors. Video games can cause AGGRESSION, though. I have experienced that for myself a lot!
I don't think that seems like a fair comparison...sorry. Your husband and little brother just seem to be on complete opposite ends of the spectrum in multiple ways, unless that was what you were going for. - Maddie Walters
I guess you're right. I have a better example. I have older cousins about my husband's age who play video games that are considered violent, and yes they are a little aggressive and get very offensive if they don't win, but shooting other people doesn't make them want to shoot a person in real life. But that aggression is still there. Better? :)
Haha! I guess I can work with that :) I agree with what you're saying. You know what I haven't noticed? I'm mostly hearing about aggression coming from the guys (which makes sense), but is there much of an argument about girls becoming violent from playing such video games? Could it be a dominance or testosterone issue? - Maddie Walters
I totally agree with the essay. People who create violent acts in society have preexisting underlying issues. Experiencing violent behaviors portrayed on t.v. or video games or actually committing a virtual murder may heighten the preexisting issues, but the games are not the cause.
I sort of agree. Games are no different than some of the stuff they've seen on T.V. Have you ever seen the cartoon Superjail? That's the most violent show I've ever see, but I think real life events contribute much more to shaping a person.
It is hard for me to have an opinion about something I know little about. The only knowledge I have is about 90% of my friends play video games on a daily basis. The worst thing that they have done was getting a speeding ticket. I stop playing video games when I started college, and I have been in a stickier scenarios at parties. Stephen Knotek
I felt like that the video game introduce a new possibility for them, but it is still the individuals responsibility to act or not act upon those feelings.
I agree with this article but then I don't. This has been mentioned in the earlier posts but I think it does depend on the child and they behaviors. Some children are very competitive and if they lose they get really mad and aggressive. Other children just try again to win the video game or beat up the bad guy (what ever goes on). Sydney Medsker
Having a brother who has played video games his whole time i agree there is a connection with aggressiveness. He would get so mad and mean when we would tell him he had to get off and do chores or homework. Today now that he is older i think he has realized how much he played and has changed so today he does monitor himself with how much he does play.

I think that the kid that has violent thought or even actions have a mental disorder or thinking process! Not video game related, yes maybe it pulled a string but never does it make someone kill someone!!
I think that everything has to have moderation.. I think when children are constantly playing a video game and get so into it, and are asked to stop playing, I think they tend to be a little more snappy.. -Kortney T
I believe in some cases video game cause negative feelings or often tempers to arise. I have seen it in friends and video games can bring out a whole other side of someone.

I believe that it depends on the maturity of the child.

DeleteMarshall has a point. Being the only person in my household of gamers I am the most aggressive.

I really like this article. It dose not says video games are good or bad, but it dose say that video games don't cos violence in adults minds.

I agree, I have a friend lose to a game and he got so upset grow the controller.
DeleteIf competition causes aggression then perhaps we should worry more about sports than video games. However, I don't think either are an issue.

It is all in moderation too much of a anything can be bad.

Not too much gummy bears!!! Video games are just time fillers. If you play a lot of video games, you have a lot of time.

Exactly how i feel about this.
DeleteTrue! I agree!
DeleteI believe anything in moderation is okay. Nothing is healthy when you do unhealthy amounts of it.

I agree I have a younger brother that had this issue and sometimes it was so intense it caused issues in the family.
