"Advertising's 15 Basic Appeals"

Here is the link to the article by Jib Fowles, "Advertising's 15 Basic Appeals." Although the article is pretty dated (it was first published in the journal Etc. in 1982), the information is still sound. Do you agree with the items in this list? Can you think of any appeals that could be added to the list? Do any of them overlap to the point that they could be combined or removed?

  1. The need to nurture and the need to feel safe seem very similar and could be combined into one.

    2. I agree with Evan, I think when you nurture a child, you are protecting that child as well.

  2. So we're talking about advertising, and, of course, the first thing that comes to mind is superbowl commercials (I know, we haven't gotten to commercials yet, but bare with me). I feel like half the time they don't make any sense! Am I just not looking deep enough to find the appeals? Do I not understand something that will be enlightened to me by next class? It seems as though most of the superbowl commercials aim to be funny rather than try to convey a clear message. Don't get me wrong, it works! Maybe that should be added to the list of appeals. Humor...yep, definitely. Somebody, call this guy up from 1982 and tell him to add Humor to his list of appeals.

    1. At first, I felt the same way as you did. But now I can see that commercials are trying to persuade you with some sort of appeals. Take those funny Dorito commercials during the super bowl. Sure they are stupid and silly, but they are trying to show that it's "cool" to buy the product. That satisfies the need for affiliation or domination. That's how I see it.

  3. The need for dominance and the need for affiliation could be considered one appeal. They both have to do with the fact that using or buying a certain product makes you feel "cool."

  4. I referenced back to this a lot for the last couple of papers. It shone some light on things I hadn't thought about before.

    1. I agree. This was very helpful with writing papers. I never really thought about how advertisers try and appeal to certain people, but now its more clear when I see advertisements.

  5. I never realized how many appeals there were until I saw this. Now I can see all the different things people are trying to appeal to in commercial ads. What advertisements do you think people try to use the most now day?
